Critique

Having not judged the breed for some time I was excited to receive the invitation to judge this delightful breed and pleased with the large entry. The majority of the dogs were new to me, as were a lot of the owners.  All my top winners were a credit to the breed and to their owners and in some classes I could have done with more Green Cards.  I felt the depth of quality was higher in the bitches.

Some things have improved since I last judged, uniformity of size, broader muzzles and fewer pinched nostrils. Coats have improved both in texture and quantity.  However I was saddened to find that several structural faults are far too prevalent and I can’t help wondering if they have been allowed to creep in hidden by the overall glamour of the coat.

Many were lacking the desired spring of rib resulting in a narrow chest.  Some were straight in shoulder, and or, over long in the back.  Any of these faults detract from breed type and make the typical stylish gait with good reach and elevation impossible.

Presentation is also important, it is after all it is a beauty show, overlong nails and crusty noses can easily be resolved the day before the show, a stained coat may require more effort, or better still to prevent the problem in the first place.

With good temperament a consideration and bearing in mind the foregoing comments here are my placing.

  1. Thomas, THREADGOLD DAN DARE AT JAVALCY, dainty and compact, scores with round skull, dark eye, wide nostrils, strong neck and a rounded rib cage, strong in loins, moved soundly with plenty of drive and maintaining a level back.  Super temperament.

  2. Davidson SHARLANA GIGOLO, nice size and well made throughout, pleasing head with oriental expression, wide nostrils and dark eye.  Moved and showed well.
