Critique

I was so disappointed when the pandemic meant I lost my first CC appointment for the breed and then had to wait 3 years for this appointment to come around. Even more disappointing is how the breed has changed in those few years, going from entries of 100+ with quality in abundance to entries regularly of less than 40 with just 1 or 2 dogs in each class. It seems that several breeders/exhibitors were lost when they never returned after covid and the breed doesn’t seem to have yet attracted any serious new Chin enthusiasts. This has been more noticeable at Open shows where entries upwards of 15 were regularly seen just 3 or 4 years ago and now 1 or even 0 are a regular occurrence. I do hope it’s just a recovery period and the numbers and depth of quality will start to improve, they are such a special little breed and delightful companions, I have to admit until I was owned by one I hadn’t quite realised just how fabulous they are!

VD (1) 1 Pearce & Hann, Ch Rakuchin Kenji Na. A super start to the entry with this 8yr old still in tremendous condition and displaying an elegant outline with enough neck, firm topline, lovely cobby body and high set tail carried well over his back. Large handsome head with dark eyes, short muzzle with plenty of cushioning and small high set ears. Moving with accuracy holding his outline firm and head carried proudly. In profuse, well presented coat and handled to an advantage. A little bit more of him all through than my ideal but there’s no denying his quality, soundness and condition and in this entry he thoroughly deserved the RCC & BV.

MPD (1) 1 Vincent, Yama Midwood Master Tailor. 8month baby with a sweet face, lovely eyes showing enough white, well set small ears and short muzzle. Nice size and substance with good rear angulation and well set and carried tail, topline needs to settle. Moved well enough but needed to move a little faster to get into his stride a little better. In nice, well marked coat.

PD (3,1) 1 Quinn, Sharlarna Swindler. Small, neat puppy who is already an accomplished showman and was always making the best of himself. Very nice head and expression, broad and rounded between neat ears with dark eyes showing white and giving a typical expression. Soundly constructed with ample reach of neck, level topline, good chest and ribbing for age, correctly balanced length of leg and good feet. Moving with good reach and elevation, accurate out and back and holding his outline firm. In good coat for his age, just a little heavy marked. I’m sure he’ll have a bright future. BP. 2 Tong, Cranvarl the Red King of Jakconas. A lovely little r/w who was intent on playing his handler up! Very sweet face with lovely eyes showing enough white to give the desired expression, short muzzle, high set ears on a broad, rounded skull. Soundly constructed with good topline, tail carriage and rear angulation. Not quite as together as 1 and his exuberance didn’t help him make the best of himself, but equally it was lovely to see such a happy puppy! I’m sure he’ll be another who’ll do well as he matures.

JD (2) 1 Rooney & Green, Ch Jaschin Hold That Thought JW. Small, compact b/w who’s type appeals greatly. Smart outline with enough neck, good front with fine bone, cobby body, level back and well set and carried tail. Correctly shaped head with lovely dark eyes and short, well cushioned muzzle. Moved smartly, presented in lovely coat and condition. 2 Crane, Cranvarl The Student Prince. Puppy with large masculine head of good width between small, high set ears with large dark eyes that could show more white. Good neck and shoulders, level topline and high set tail carried correctly. Profuse, well presented coat, a little heavily marked. Sound on the move, would just like less of him all through.

PGD (6,2) 1 Hubble & Summerbell, Sharlarna Hit Man For Dabrives. Easy winner here presenting a neatly balanced outline, small and squarely built with good substance and fine bone. Appealing head and expression, well marked with short muzzle and pleasing expression. Moved well when settled holding his topline firm and tail carried perfectly. Spot on for size and substance with a lovely confident attitude. 2 Morgan & Godwin, Shardlow Koji. Another of a nice size, square and compact with cobby body and fine bone. A little stronger in head with darkish eyes showing the desired white, good pigment, and well cushioned muzzle. Moved happily. 3 Vincent, Cholas Yasu At Yama.

LD (1) 1 Flynn, Sharlarna Evolution At Linjato Gorgeous type who appealed immediately. I loved his size, short cobby body, fine bone and beautifully presented, well marked coat, all giving the most typical outline. Ample reach of neck, straight front, could have a little more width of chest, correct length of body, well angulated rear with tail carried beautifully over his back. Such a beautiful head with lovely eyes, open nostrils, well cushioned, short muzzle and neat ears with superb feathering. Moved well enough, close going away but good in front, just didn’t seem to be very enthusiastic so wasn’t really making the most of himself which was very disappointing and lost him the chance at higher honours. I’m sure he will carry his title when he’s on form.

OD (1) 1 Lindsay, Ch Cranvarl Roger at Anjuli JW. 2yr r/w who is the complete package. Elegant and compact in outline with lovely neck and shoulders giving a proud head carriage, firm topline, good chest and ribbing, well angulated rear and slender legs. Masculine but pretty head with a gorgeous expression from his large dark eyes with desired white showing, short muzzle with ample cushioning and broad rounded skull with well feathered, high set ears. He moved with a stylish gait, good elevation and strong rear, good out and back and looking a picture in profile. Great attitude, demanding attention, in superb condition with plenty of soft , silky coat to complete the picture. He has really matured well in the last few months and is looking the best that I’ve seen him. He won the DCC here quite comfortably. DCC, BOS

JB (3) 1 Lindsay, Jaschin Who’d Have Thought at Anjuli. Another class winner by Ch. Anjuli Trevor who seems to be proving himself as a useful sire. This one a very nice r/w who is still immature but every so sound and impressive on the move. Well constructed throughout with compact frame, proud head carriage, firm level topline and well set and carried tail. Pretty face with a cheeky glint in her lovely eyes! Still needs time to fill her frame fully and grow her coat but certainly has everything going for her at this stage and would be worthy of her title. 2 Calvert, Somergemz Balenciaga. Another smart little girl, similar in size and shape, elegant and compact with good topline, proud head carriage and correctly carried tail. Correctly shaped head with darkish eyes which could show a little more white to enhance her expression. Very smart on the move and beautifully handled to get the best out of her. 3 Rooney & Green, Jaschin Thoughts That Count.

PGB (4,1) 1 Steele, Threadgold Starstruck JW. Not in her best coat but was the best here for movement in profile. Good reach of neck, level topline and high set tail, good chest and ribbing, well turned stifles and fine bone. Nice head with desired expression, large dark eyes showing enough white, neat high set ears and short wide muzzle. Lovely size and balanced outline, just needs to come back into coat and condition. 2 Cushing, Spiritisle Angel Delight. Nice size with cobby body and fine bone. Topline could be better and could be a little more compact. Very sweet face with lovely expression, large dark eyes with enough white, high set ears with good feathering and well cushioned muzzle. Moved happily. 3 Martin, Sleepyhollow Cover Girl for Kirdanchi.

LB (6) 1 Tong & Crane, Cranvarl Maude. Sister to the DCC winner and absolutely no denying she’s a girl! Much like her brother she has really matured well recently and is turning into quite the exquisite little lady. For me she is perfect for size and type, small, cobby, compact and fine boned with a beautifully marked profuse coat enhancing her beautiful outline. Soundly made with good front and rear assembly, short level back, ample reach of neck and well set and carried tail. She liked to play her handler up on the move but did more than enough to win the class and then returned to the challenge and showed her socks off to take the RCC. I’m sure she’ll appeal to many as she matures further. RBCC. 2 Quinn, Sharlarna Eye Candy JW. Similar size to 1 and again presents a square, balanced outline with slender legs, good chest and ribbing, firm topline and strong rear. Pretty head of good width with neat ears, darkish eyes with just a little white, short muzzle and dense pigment. Very attentive and making the most of herself at all times, moving freely with good elevation and strong rear action. Not in her best coat on the day. 3 Calvert, Jaschin Fendi with Somergemz.

OB (4) 1 Rooney & Green, Ch Jaschin First Edition. An easy winner here and it was a pleasure to finally get the chance to judge this well known b/w bitch. Beautifully balanced in outline, small and cobby, squarely built with slender legs, good feet, wide chest, perfect topline and well angulated rear. The most delightful head and expression, broad rounded skull with neat high set ears, beautiful dark eyes with enough white to give and astonished expression, short wide muzzle with ample cushioning and good nostrils. Every inch the showgirl standing with her head held proudly, totally attentive to her handler, moving with the best action I saw all entry, Totally accurate in all directions, free and effortless with good reach and elevation, holding her outline firm at all times. In plenty of silky coat, presented beautifully to enhance her outline, to be ultra critical her body is a little heavier marked than I’d like but that certainly doesn’t detract from such a super little package. I had no hesitation in awarding her both the BCC and BOB. 2 Rooney & Green, Jaschin Paws For Applause. Another nice one from this kennel, beautifully marked but she had left her clothes at home! Very similar in size and shape and equally as well constructed with short cobby body, firm topline and well set and carried tail. Nicely shaped, large head but not quite the expression of 1. Good width between neat high set ears, wide, well cushioned muzzle, dark eyes and lovely markings. Not as settled on the move as 1 being rather excitable! But is certainly sound and accurate and holds a good outline. I’m sure she’ll have better days when she has her mind on the job and her clothes on! 3 Pearce & Hann, Rakuchin Skyes Aria.
