Japanese Chin

I would like to thank Jennie Griffiths and Nick Gourley and all of their Committee for inviting me to award CCs for the first time to Chins in the UK. Also a major Thank You to my two excellent stewards Jan and Pedro Fiers, judging 221 dogs on the day and keeping everything running smoothly was only possible thanks to them.

So nice to start the day judging my favourite breed, a breed I have for over 30 years now. Writing this it feels odd as the situation for short faced breeds like the Chin in Holland isn’t looking good at present. Since March 2019 it is official forbidden to breed dogs with a nose-skull ratio that is shorter than 1/3. Chins, who have been short faced for hundreds and hundreds of years are now to have longer noses…. I would love to laugh about it if it wasn’t so sad and so very true.

Therefor I think it is of up most importance that we pay special attention to health, to construction and to the wonderful attitude and character our breed has.

A big thank you to the exhibiters as well, thank you for allowing me to go over your dogs and giving me the opportunity to give my opinion. I am very pleased with most of my class winners. Sometimes it was a close call between the numbers 1 and 2. Overall the soundness was good, no problems with being short of breath either but I did find several kinked tails and this is something to be very careful about and dogs with this featured should not be bred from.

Good size, nice square in outline. Good width in skull. Well-rounded. A bit high set ears. Lovely dark eye that shows sufficient amount of white in the inner corner. Well-formed muzzle. Sufficient spring of rib, could have more depth in chest. Slightly roached topline. Good tail set and carriage. Coat of correct soft silky texture. Well boned. Showing the breeds typical happy temperament.

1st: 4371 BANKS Ms R Midwood Monaco Choya

Lovely square puppy who is still in full development. Very pleasing head with good width of skull, nicely rounded. Well placed and feathered ears. Very dark eyes that could show a little bit more white in the inner corners. Good nose placement, correct open nostrills. Nice plush muzzle, well rounded and already well cushioned. Good neck and shoulder. Needs to fill out in ribs and get a bit more depth in chest. Well placed tail, firmly carried over his back. Coat of excellent texture, length needs to come with age. Elegant bone. Showing great character and moved with spirit and drive.

2nd: 4378 BLOW & ALLEN Mr & Mrs D & S Sheardream Costa

Very ‘Japanese’ looking puppy. Like the nr 1 still in full development. Well-rounded head that has sufficient width in skull. Correct ear set, well feathered. Eyes are a tat too prominent and showing the maximum in white in the inner corner. Quite prominent in muzzle with a slightly to high placed nose. I would like to see more width and depth to get a softer finishing of face. Good spring of ribs, still needs to develop more depth in chest. Coat of excellent texture and length for age. Well placed and carried tail. Good mover who shows a very happy character.

This young boy has quite a few good features but I was highly distracted by his overall appearance. This is not how a Chin should be presented. The dog wasn’t clean and his expression spoiled by the staining of his face. Sufficient width in skull that was well rounded in front, and between his ears. Well placed and feathered ears. His muzzle is too much turned up. Therefore his nose is placed too high between his eyes and the overall expression of the muzzle isn’t soft. Very good neck and shoulder. Sufficient spring of ribs and depth in chest. Good tail set and very positive movement. In between coats at the moment.

All combined a lovely small bundle! Excellent head with the correct soft expression. Well-shaped skull, good width and rounded. Good ear set and well feathered. Well placed nose with correct open nostrils. Good eye with correct amount of white showing. Excellent muzzle of good width and depth, giving him a lovely soft finishing of face. Needs to body up, the spring of rib is there but he still needs a more depth in chest. Could, perhaps, be a little more square in body. Excellent coat quality. Very positive mover with a great attitude.

2nd: 4453 TARABAD Mr N Tillashby's Nick Is In A Twist At Frondil

Boy of good breed type. Well-rounded skull in front and between the ears. Dark eyes that show sufficient amount of white. Well placed nose. Muzzle would benefit from just a bit more width and depth. Good neck and shoulder, well ribbed could be a slightly shorter in back. Lovely silky coat. Excellent tail set, well plumed and correctly carried over the back.

Elegant and compact dog with a profuse coat. Well-shaped head that excels in top of head. When I am critical I would like to see a fraction larger eyes that also shows more white in its inner corners. Well placed nose with sufficient open nostrils. Would like to see a bit more depth in underjaw. Excellent neck and shoulder. Good spring of rib, good tail set and carriage. Coat of correct silky texture. Moves with style, keeping his compact shape well. Good set of legs with nice low placed hock, giving him excellent finishing of pace.

2nd: 4465 WESTWICK, Miss S & DAVIDSON Mr A W Hin Satorie Almazniy Vihr At Sharlarna (Imp) It

Very masculine appearance. Head with sufficient width and roundness in skull. Well feathered ears. Dark eye that might show a bit more white of eye. Nose could be slightly larger and have more open nostrils. Rather prominent and turned up underjaw. Giving him a harder expression one would wish for. Very good spring of rib. Slightly heavier in bone. Excellent coat texture, well set tail, heavily plumed and carried correct over his back. Dispositioned with an excellent character!

Square in outline but a bit up to size. Masculine head with lustrous dark eyes. Good width of skull, well rounded. Broad muzzle that could have a bit more depth in underjaw. It’s a pity that on one side his facial black markings run all the way to the corner of his mouth. Well arched neck. For his age he should have more spring of rib and depth in chest. High set tail that is rather short, in regards to his age their should be more plume too. Nice straight legs. Coat texture could be more soft and silky. Would like to see a better stride on him when moving around. Very happy and gentle disposition.

Very elegant and smart little dog. Compact in body. Excellent shaped skull that is well rounded in front. Dark eye with the correct look of astonishing. Slightly higher set ears that lack feathering. Well placed nose with open nostrils. Correct shaped muzzle, giving a soft finishing of face. A pity that his facial marking on one side runs to the corner of his mouth too. Excellent neck and shoulder. Sufficient spring of rib and depth in body. Excellent tail set and carriage, well plumed. Nice set of fine boned but strong legs with correct hare feet. Stylish in movement and showing excellent character.

2nd: 4443 RUSHTON Mr R F & Mrs E A Sangria Standing Ovation At Tiflin

Attractive little boy of good breed type. Facial marking not symmetrical which is a pity. Nice width of skull, well rounded in front and between ears. Correct ear set with nice, long feathering. Dark eye with correct amount of white showing. Such a pity his face isn’t a 100% clean, this is a bit distracting. Well-shaped, soft muzzle. Excellent ribs, giving him a lovely substantial body. Correct tail set and carriage. Nice soft, silky coat. He had a bit of an ‘off day’ and wasn’t showing himself to the fullest, which was a shame.

Very attractive ‘sandy’ coloured, sable boy. Elegant and profusely coated. Masculine head with good width and well-rounded in front and between ears. Dark eyes, well placed nose with open nostrils. Broad muzzle with correct depth giving a soft finishing of face. Excellent neck and shoulder. Sufficiently ribbed but could have more depth in chest. Coat of excellent texture, straight, soft and silky. Good tail set and carriage. Elegant bone with. Very positive mover.

2nd: 4452 SMITH, Ms J K & DANKS Miss P J L Shantallah Kasu

Masculine boy with a good square outline. Well-shaped head, rounded and of good width. Excellent ear set., profusely feathered. Excellent, very typical eye showing correct amount of white and giving the some desired look of astonishment. Good nose placement. Muzzle with excellent ‘plush’ cushioning. Good neck and shoulder. Well ribbed. Taking his age in consideration, he should carry more coat. Very sound on the move. Great attitude too!

Elegant and compact, -darker- sable, boy. Who carries a profuse coat, is smart and asks attention when standing in the ring. I am smitten by the head this boy carries. It is masculine but elegant. Has good width and is well rounded in front and between ears. Beautiful, expressive eyes that show correct amount of white. Well placed, large dark nose with open nostrils. Superb broad muzzle with good width of underjaw so his upper lips are well supported and plush up, almost hiding his eyes in a very attractive way. I now realise, looking back at the pictures I took, that he too has his facial marking on one side of his head running until the corner of his mouth but on the day I was taken by his head I didn’t notice! Excellent neck and shoulder. Well ribbed and substantial in body. Slightly stronger in bone. High set tail with long plume. Very balanced on the move, keeping his compact outlines very well. Showing the breeds happy temperament non-stop. I was more than pleased to give him the reserve CC.

2nd: 4389 DORAN Ms M Shardlow Mikado With Osakazuki

Very elegant and pretty boy. Lovely soft expression. Well rounded skull with a slightly higher set ear that is profusely feathered. Dark eye that shows a bit of white in the inner corners. Correct placed nose with well open nostrils. Well cushioned, soft muzzle. He is slightly longer in body and would benefit from slightly more spring of rib. High set tail.  Elegant bone and nice hare feet. Coat of correct silky texture.

1st: 4430 PEARCE, Ms T & HANN Ms S Ch Rakuchin Kenji Na

The breed standard is very clear when it concerns the General Appearance of the Chin: ‘Elegant and aristocratic, smart, compact with profuse coat’. So well said when comparing it with boy nr 4430. I was smitten the moment this boy, four years old, entered my ring. Head held high, bursting with self-confidence and attitude. Masculine, broad head that is well rounded in front and between ears. Gorgeous eyes, of correct size, set far apart and showing correct amount of white. Making sure he has the so desired look of astonishment. Well placed, large nose with open nostrils. Correct, soft muzzle. Very proud neck carriage, holding well when moving around. Excellent spring of rib and depth in chest. Elegant, strong fine bone. Good tail set and carriage. Soft, silky coat. A dog that you want to see moving around again and again, never setting a foot wrong. Happy to award him the CC and BOS.

2nd: 4386 DAVIDSON Mr A W Omikudzi Don Juan At Sharlarna (Imp)

Absolute stunning sable. Square outline, profusely coated. Very attractive masculine head of good width and shape. Beautiful eyes that show the correct amount of white in the inner corners. Well placed nose. Broad muzzle with well cushioned upper lips. Excellent neck and shoulder. Sufficient spring of rib and depth in body but on the day he should have been in better condition. Excellent tail set and carriage. Elegant bone but weak in pasterns. On the move a little unsteady.

Lovely puppy bitch. Very well put together, happy and good natured. Very feminine in head. Rounded skull in front and between ears. Well-placed ears that already have a good amount of feathering. Absolute gorgeous dark eyes that show correct amount of white. Well-placed nose. Broad muzzle with -sadly- a prominent underjaw. Very good neck and shoulder. Good spring of rib and already depth in body. Correct high set tail, carried well over her back. Nice strong but elegant bone. Lovely coat texture, soft and silky. Positive on the move.

2nd: 4429 PARADISE Mrs J L Shardlow Lili Marlene

Very feminine little girl. Attractive face with a gorgeous expression. Well-rounded skull. Slightly higher placed ears. Hopefully with the weight of the feathering in time this will be less noticeable. Excellent eye, set wide apart, lustrous and showing the correct amount of white. Well-placed nose with sufficient open nostrils. Her muzzle shows excellent width and depth. Giving her a lovely finishing of face. Good neck. Her body needs to gain in width and depth, but I am sure this will come with age. Correct bone. Time is a bit her thing as I am sure that in time, with a bit more ring practice and exercise, she will ‘come together’ and be able to show all her lovely features to the optimum.

Oops, and suddenly your heart misses a beat. This happened when this little treasure walked into my ring. What a delight she is!! The only thing I wrote down in my notes on her was; “Breath-taking” and that she is. Everything is a small package.  Beautiful and elegant head in all details. Well-rounded in front and between ears. Excellent nose placing, lustrous eyes and a very soft and plush muzzle. Excellent reach of neck, well layback shoulder. Compactly built, well ribbed and good depth in body. Excellent bone. High set tail carried correctly over her back. Lovely straight and silky coat. Excellent covering of ground. Very happy to give her Best Puppy and the reserve CC in bitches. Great future ahead for this little one!

Sometimes life isn’t fair. And it wasn’t for nr 4438 on the day. Being so gorgeous as she is and then you meet your Goliath in the ring and you have to take the back seat! Smashing puppy. Excellent size and breed type. Gorgeous feminine head with about everything detail correct. Very good neck and shoulder. Compact and cobby body. Good tail set and carriage. Strong but elegant bone. Wasn’t in coat like the nr 1 so I am sure that, when she will be in the future, it is going to be a true battle between these two girls. So gorgeous, both of them!

Feminine bitch. Good width of skull, well-rounded in front. Slightly high set ears with good feathering. Beautiful dark eye, showing correct amount of white. Well-placed nose with nice open nostrils. Good width in muzzle. It’s a pity her facial markings run all the way to the corners of her mouth, giving the muzzle a smaller impression. Good spring of rib and depth in body. Excellent coat texture and deep black colour versus sparkling white background. Well boned. Positive mover.

2nd: 4467 WOLFENDEN Mr & Mrs K A & R L Bechinka Minto

Lovely girl who is so well put together. Gorgeous head. Well-rounded in front and between ears. Ears well feathered. Dark eye with correct amount of white showing. Excellent placed nose. Nice broad muzzle with good depth giving her face a lovely finishing. Good neck and shoulder. Well ribbed and good body depth. Good set of legs, slender in bone and nice hare feet. Small but a lot to like. The standard asks for ‘elegant’ and ‘compact’, something she certainly is. Well-rounded head. Good ear set. Wide placed dark eyes with sufficient white showing. Correct placed nose, nostrils could be slightly more open. Nice muzzle. Squarely built. Like to see just a tat more rib and depth in body on her. Elegant bone. Nice hare feet. Showing great character and is positive on the move.

2nd: 4373 BANKS Ms R Choya Tomomi

Girl who is up to size. Square in outline. Excellent width of skull. Well-rounded in front, could have slightly more roundness between the ears. Good width between her dark and expressive the eyes., showing sufficient amount of white. Well-placed nose with large open nostrils. Good width in muzzle but I like to see more depth in underjaw for a better finishing of face. In time she will get a bit more width and depth in body, finishing the picture perfectly. Very nice coat texture, soft and silky, beautiful sparkling black & white. Well boned. I like to see a bit more angulation in the rear and a slightly lower placed hock. Sometimes you get confronted with something that you really, really would like to have yourself. When nr 4442 entered my ring this feeling struck me like thunder. And was I mistaken when I heard Shirley Bassey’s “Climb every mountain…” over the intercom?

This little Chin girl has so much to give… The most beautiful feminine head. One that is so very pleasing to look at and so balanced in every detail. All the lines are correct. She possesses all the circles one is looking for perfection. Head, muzzle, eyes…, all circles all blending in one another. Followed by compactly built body, wide in chest, correct depth, ‘cobby’. She is smothering in a perfect soft and silky coat. Strong bone, but very elegant and the prettiest of hare feet. Possessing the breeds character so well: Gay, happy, gentle and good natured. Effortless on the move.

I was more than please to give her the bitch CC and BOB.  “Follow every rainbow…., ‘til you find your dream..."

Lovely size bitch. Compact and cobby in shape. Very feminine too. Good width of skull, well rounded. Correct placed ears. Dark eyes showing correct amount of white. Well-placed nose with good open nostrils. Very nice width of muzzle, her cushions are well supported by her broad underjaw. Such a pity that her expression gets distracted by the staining above her nose and asymmetrical face marking. Excellent neck and shoulder. Nice substantial body. Good bone and correct turn of stifle. Coat of correct texture, soft and silky. Very free and effortless on the move.

A ten year old girl who does not show her age at all! Very feminine, a true charmer. Excellent shaped head. Well feathered ears. Gorgeous dark eye that still lurks with mischief. Well-placed nose. Still nicely filled muzzle. Good neck and shoulder. Her topline shows her age a bit. Good tail set and carriage. Well plumed. Just love her attitude. Happy to give her Best Veteran.

2nd: 4410 LINDSAY Miss L Ch Sleepyhollow Sapphire Diva At Anjuli Sh.CM

Eight year old lady with a lovely attitude and show spirit. Good width of skull. Well-spaced eyes, dark and lustrous. Would like to see a less prominent muzzle to give her a softer finishing of face. Well coated with and excellent tail set and carriage. Correct bone and hare feet. Doesn’t comes ‘together’ as well as nr 1.
