It is a great privilege and humbling experience to be asked to judge one’s own favourite breed at the greatest dog show in the World and I was more than ever before looking forward to this appointment. Due to the looming Corona situation it was touch and go if the show would go ahead but who would have thought that Crufts would be the twilight of dog shows for the foreseeable future!

I was honoured and deeply touched by a wonderful entry which was only marred by the average number of absentees. In the UK we are very fortunate to find the breed not only in a numerical strong sustainable position but also of general very high standard. Allegedly a notorious troublemaker from outside our hobby was loitering around the ringside to find extreme types with health issues.  She must have had a fruitless morning and should have come to the conclusion that Chins are in general very healthy and free of exaggerations! Most exhibits were sound and showed the wonderful happy disposition of the breed and the average level of presentation was excellent and some simply outstanding.  Due to the high standard in the majority of classes hair-splitting decisions had to be made and many quality dogs ended further down the line or sometimes even card less.

1st CHARNELL KENJI AT TILLASHBY (MS J & MISS Z GODBEHERE)

Headed a strong class of fit and typical seniors and scored on his type and shape. Large head with equally soft and masculine expression, correct size and shape of eye, excellent cushioning, good turn-up and correct finish of mouth, refined straight front, truly cobby, even markings and correct coat, showed well.

2nd DALEHOUSE ELEMENTS OF ELGAR JAKCONAS (MISS TONG)

Truly masculine and built on solid but in no way coarse lines, large head with open facial features, excellent profile, good reach of neck and firm topline, presented in excellent coat, moved and showed well, not quite the shortness of loin of 1 but close decision.

3rd JALINDRI KONATSU (MRS L J DOPSON)

A wonderful oldie and really tough to compete with exhibits   who just reached the age limit for this class. Still soft pleasing expression, refined frame, simply presented in wonderful condition, a credit to owner.

1st CHOLAS YOSHIO (MRS N S & MR D R SWAIN)

2 youngsters rather different in type and state  of maturity. Built on cobby lines but still refined and elegant, undoubtedly masculine head with open face, typical eye without any hint of exaggeration, well shaped skull, correct neck and front, firm topline, coat coming nicely, showed with confidence.

2nd CHOYA TENBY OF JAKCONAS (MISS TONG)

A true baby of excellent size, nicely balanced head of good size in comparison with body, pleasing profile, naturally still needs to drop in body, a touch longer in loin but should balance out with age, slightly heavier markings do not dis-attract very promising overall picture.

1st SEAFAR SETO (MISS T BURNS)

Stood out in this class for his non-exaggerated breed type, correct size and construction and moved accordingly. Wonderful eye and cushioning, fine-boned, well-angulated front, equally dainty and solid, good coat for age, showed well.

2nd MITAPIP HAS TO BE ALFIE (MRS M CONSTABLE)

R/w built on slightly larger scale and still needs to settle in topline but scored in facial expression and overall conformation, refined and elegant , coat coming nicely.

3rd PALTEEMOOR PRINCE MITSUO (MRS S J WHITE)

A true boy built on slightly larger scale, solid and sturdy, head goes with overall type, a true performer but not quite the daintiness of 1st & 2nd.

 

Junior - Dog Entries: 11 Abs: 3

 

1st YAMA GHOST RIDER WITH CHOLAS (MESSRS N & J FARRUGIA)

Lemon/white instantly attracts for his square and cobby outline. Equally soft and masculine expression with the desired oriental look given by the correct shape and size of eye, filling under the eye, nose-placement and cushioning. Fine bone of correct length, stands four-square, presented in full bloom, precise mover and showed with confidence, should do well.

2nd SANGRIA MOON WALK (MR G W FARMER)

Another very pleasing youngster of exquisite type and correct shape and size, classical head with correct cushioning, firm topline, excellent tail-set

Well-angulated front and behind, shown in full coat, not quite the showmanship of 1 but certainly close decision.

3rd LITTLETIGERS INNUENDO WITH JASCHIN (MR S J, MR J & MRS A ROONEY & GREEN)

Quite impressive and mature youngster built on a fraction larger and longer scale , undoubtedly  masculine head, well-filled with correct eye and nose-placement, excellent coat, moved with confidence.

1st DELIS SAKURA ILA NIPPON DANSANT TIGRE [ATC AW02835ISR] (MRS J GAISINSKY)

Epitomises the elegance and refinement of the breed. Compact but at the same time beautifully flowing lines, large well rounded head with open facial features, excellent nostrils and pigment, correct length of neck enabled him to carry his head proudly, short firm back, refined an sound hindquarters, hare-feet, presented in full coat and  scored on the move, pushed hard for higher honours and only lost out on maturity.

2nd MIDWOOD MONACO CHOYA (MR M & MRS R ROWLEY)

Truly masculine of excellent shape and size, large well-balanced head, correct size and shape of eye, super cushioning, equally cobby and refined, showed well,  not quite the reach of neck of 1, moved with excellent drive and sufficient stride.

3rd TILLASHBY'S NICK IS IN A TWIST AT FRONDIL JW (MR N TARABAD)

One I have admired since he was a puppy and he has developed into an exquisite young dog full of quality, truly refined of excellent shape and size, pretty face with correct look of astonishment, presented in correct coat with attractive fringing, being typically sensitive he clearly disapproved of the noisy buzz in the hall and gave his young handler quite a hard time but once settled showed well and his overall qualities simply had to be rewarded. 

 

Post Graduate - Dog Entries: 11 Abs: 2

 

1st SANGRIA PAMOJILL PRIVATE EYE (MR G W FARMER)

Notoriously difficult class with all kinds of types, shapes and sizes.

Scored on his classical outline and dainty overall appearance, very pleasing head with correct eye and nose-placement, super profile, fine bone, firm top-line, high tail-set, excellent coat, showed with confidence.

 

2nd HIN SATORIE ALMAZNIY VIHR AT SHARLARNA RUS IMP (S & MR A WESTWICK & DAVIDSON)

Built on slightly larger scale but certainly refined and elegant, truly masculine head with arrogant oriental expression and open features, cobby with excellent depth and width of ribcage, a fraction longer in loin, super tail-set and carriage, attractive coat and markings, moved with purpose, not quite the front  of 1 but close decision.

3rd EVANSLY EMOJI (MISS M J D EVANS)

Very much liked his type and overall shape, head in proportion to size, very balanced and excellent  detailed features, really lovely package only wished he would have made more of himself.

1st TILLASHBY SAMURAI SUN AT SHARLARNA (MS A D A & MR A FORTH DAVIDSON)

It is not a secret that I have admired this boy from the ringside and in competition many times but being a typical sensitive Chin performance on the day could be a challenge. Going over him for the first time I found all the the qualities confirmed: Ideal medium size, refined but at the same time sturdy with correct construction, large head with classical but in no way exaggerated truly Japanese expression epitomizing superior aloofness. Most attractive markings and his glamorous coat was groomed to perfection, put up a faultless performance and did not put a foot wrong which simply had to be rewarded CC & BOB.  

2nd JAVALCY THE GREAT MIKADO JW (MS J THOMAS)

A very attractive dainty boy of classical proportions and another one which could not be overlooked in this strong class. Large masculine head with broad skull, expressive eye, correct stop and nose-placement, cobby body, firm topline, high tail set, moved and showed well, not quite the front of 1 but close contender.

3rd SHARLARNA TYSON (S & MR A WESTWICK & DAVIDSON)

Instantly attracts for his stallion attitude and overall masculinity  but at the same time refined and elegant. Nicely balanced head with excellent cushioning looking good from all angles, sound as the come and presented in full coat, confident mover, certainly in the top league and just unfortunate to meet such strong competition

1st H RAKUCHIN KENJI NA (MS T & MS S PEARCE & HANN)

My choice for BOB when I was judging the breed last time. On the day he gained his crown and what followed was a illustrious success story and rightfully he was domineering the  the ring  for a considerably time .

In maturity I still like him enormously and he kept all his wonderful breed features and being another one who was not always the easiest to show he pulled all he stops on the day and performed faultlessly for his owner/handler. Pushed very hard in the challenge but after an agonizing  hair-splitting decision the nod went  to the younger competition Res.CC

2nd CH SHARLARNA'S MAGICIAN (MR C F YOUNG)

Another favorite of mine who did so well  since I judged him as a youngster. He combines what is so hard to achieve -  a firm body of good substance in a small frame crowned by a pretty but at the same time ultra-masculine head with typical oriental expression. Super reach of neck enabled proud head-carriage, shown in full coat and wonderfully presented, faultless performance but not quite the drive of 1, another close and hairsplitting decision in this star-studded class.

3rd CH CHOYA TADASHI (MR M & MRS R ROWLEY)

Simply combines stallion attributes with refined elegance and floating lines. Wonderful large head with masculine open facial features, excellent reach of neck, firm top-line, maybe a fraction longer in loin, dripping in coat and wonderfully presented, moved and showed with attitude, so much to like just wished him a fraction smaller.

1st SHARDLOW MIKADO WITH OSAKAZUKI (MS M M DORAN)

Another one I have admired in and outside the ring. Dainty and cobby of excellent medium size and square outline, very pleasing head with large well rounded skull, super size and shape of eye giving the right expression without exaggeration, presented in wonderful coat and moved well.

2nd JESKANDAI KOI NO YOKAN (J & L MCFARLANE)

Another pretty boy who scored on his lovely head and classical expression, dainty bone, front not his strongest point, excellent coat and pleasing side-gait.

3rd CHOYA TAKAHIRO WITH OSAKAZUKI (MS M M DORAN)

Rather on the bigger side but so balanced and used to full advantage showing off his handsome masculine expression and beautifully cushioned face, bone goes with size and a touch longer in loin but moves with excellent drive and stride .

1st RAKUCHIN AMAZING GRACE OF HOLMCHIN (MISS H & MRS A MOUNTCASTLE)

Really wished to have more than one 1st price card in this wonderful class

9 years young and presented in firm and immaculate condition, ultra-feminine head with correct eye and classical profile, harmonious reach of neck and firm topline, high tailset, moved with purpose and simply never stopped showing, a credit to the owner and loved going over her BV 

2nd SHARDLOW KNICKERBOKA GLORY SHCM (MR A PARADISE)

Another well-known young Veteran of highest quality built on square lines, very pleasing head with attractive facial features, cobby body, moved with drive and full of attitude .

3rd CH DALEHOUSE CRYSTAL TIPS (MRS C M OATRIDGE)

A cobby bitch of excellent overall type, shapely head with wonderful eye, cushioning and finish of mouth, strong well angulated neck, shown in full coat of correct texture, attractive markings, completed a lovely Trio of outstanding young Oldies!

1st SWIFTHOCKS LA BELLA (MISS L HINE)

Attracted instantly for her attitude and stood  four-square, prettiest of faces with good filling, fine boned but decent substance, coat is coming nicely, moved with confidence and scored in hind action.

2nd CHOLAS MIKI (MESSRS N & J FARRUGIA)

Another pleasing youngster of very good overall type. Nicely balanced head for age with sufficient cushioning and filling under the eye, fine bone and slender feet, moved freely but not quite the drive of 1.

1st HOLMCHIN JELLY BEAN (MISS H & MRS A MOUNTCASTLE)

What a cracker, instantly attracts for her overall balance and feminine expression, so pretty and head looked right from all angles, firm body, firm topline, excellent angulation  and sound hindquarters, just the right amount of coat for age , attractive markings and showy attitude are the icing on the cake, shall watch her future with interest and should do well BP

2nd ENNISTARÆS NIAGARA AT SPIRITISLE (IMP) (MRS J G CUSHING)

R/w built on slightly longer but balanced lines, certainly a pretty head which just needs a bit of time, super eye of correct shape and size giving oriental expression, firm topline, coat coming nicely, steady mover.

3rd PALTEEMOOR PRINCESS MEGUMI AT NIHONQIN (MRS S J WHITE)

In the nicest possible way a bit old-fashioned and of honest breed type but a lot to like. A large head with good filling, sturdy sound body and moved well, probably not a glamour puss and could be a little bit more feminine but a very useful bitch of overall good quality.

1st LITTLETIGERS GRACE BY SANDIMAN JW (IMP ITA) (MRS S BROWN-PERCIVAL)

One I have seen from the ringside but never took much notice of her. However going over her re-veiled the most pleasant surprise finding a young bitch of outstanding quality. I think it is the  wonderful balance in combination with her typical but in no way exaggerated expression which made her stand out. Truly feminine all through but at the same time dainty and sturdy, moved and showed with attitude but no unnecessary  drama, still being   young surely  she will get even better  and should trouble the best R.CC.

2nd HARLOUVILLE UPTOWN GIRL (MRS T A QUINN)

Another young girl of outstanding quality combining breed type with sound conformation without losing refined elegance. Size of head in proportion to body, excellent filling and correct non-exaggerated eye, attractive light markings and coat coming nicely, on the day unfortunately not quite the concentrated performance of 1 but close decision.

3rd PECLERS VIOLET VENABLE [ATC AW03131ITA] (MR T GIRALDI)

Instantly scored on her most typical head and expression, just the right eye, correct amount of cushioning and turn-up, sturdy body in a small a fraction longer cast, showed with attitude and moved soundly, simply unfortunate to meet such strong competition.

1st HARLOUVILLE FUNNY GIRL (MRS T A QUINN)

Instantly attracts for her dainty and square outline and the way she carried herself. Very pretty head with soft expression, correct eye and nose-placement, equally sturdy and refined body, attractive light markings, coat coming nicely, scored on the move and using her feminine  attributes to full advantage.

2nd DABRIVES SILVER DYNASTY (MR D & MR B HUBBLE & SUMMERBELL)

Quality in a solid but refined frame, undoubtedly  feminine head with correct profile and non-exaggerated look of astonishment, fine bone and correct feet, moved and showed well, pushed hard but just preferred a fraction more feminine 1.

3rd BONNIROY YORIE AKA (MRS G SPEIGHT)

R/W refined and dainty, small but well-balanced head and pleasing expression, sturdy body, excellent angulation and strong hindquarters, coat of correct texture but room for improvement when it comes to presentation.

1st HOLMCHIN MISS DEMEANOUR (MISS H & MRS A MOUNTCASTLE)

Purists might be taken back by her slightly heavier markings but what a package of quality and true breed type:  Head with most feminine soft expression, correct cushioning, wonderful eye, precise finish of mouth and correct chin, fine bone, firm topline, decent hindangulation, presented in immaculate conditon and moved with panache

 

2nd ARRANBROOK HASTOBE AT MITAPIP (MRS M CONSTABLE)

Another quality girl built on fairly similar lines but a fraction longer in cast, wonderfully balanced head with correct amount of filling, sensible eye, correct bone and sound frame, a touch out of coat on the day.

3rd OUZLEWELLÆS ARABELLA (MRS S E LINDLEY)

Correct size and overall balance, shown in full bloom, attractive open face with good cushioning and expressive eyes, sufficiently straight front, excellent side-gait and good drive from behind

1st SHARLARNA JAPANESE PLEASE (MRS T A QUINN)

Scored in this strong class on her coat, movement and performance. Maybe not the ultra Japanese  expression but so correct and showing non-exaggerated features every breeder should aim for. Her good reach of neck and sound quarters enabled her to move with correct elegant stride and good drive, lovely overall picture and seriously considered for higher honors.

2nd OMEGAVILLE IMA SHOWGIRL (MS A D A FORTH)

This lovely ultra-feminine girl scored on her excellent head with correctly shaped skull looking good from all angles, wonderful expressive eye, correct stop and cushioning, desired hare-feet, firm straight topline, sufficiently high tail-set, certainly showed and moved well but not quite the drive of 1.

3rd MERIDA MASQUERADE (MRS J WALLHEAD)

R/W ever since she was a puppy I admired  her classical shape and cobby frame and now well matured simply can not be overlooked.  Beautifully balanced head with true non-exaggerated look of astonishment, well-angulated front, firm strong hindquarters, like so many bitches a touch out of coat . My notes say rather a handful today which hopefully justifies   the placing of this excellent specimen of the breed.

1st CH CHOYA CHARLOTTE (MR M PIOVANO)

I am usually not in favour of “Baby” Champions but I remember well her spectacular puppy carrier and  who could not admire - with envy - this small package of classical breed type combined with  personality plus and true look at me attitude. Now residing abroad and fully mature she came back to conquer the ring again. The grumbling oracle at ringside might - like myself - have noticed that she was not in full coat something she shared with a considerable percentage of the bitches. However to produce a Chin in a small package with  substance  and an exquisite feminine head and bomb-proof ring-presence is an achievement many can only dream off and simply and without hesitation  needed to be rewarded  BCC.

2nd CH SWIFTHOCKS PAWS FOR THOUGHT (MR S J, MR J & MRS A ROONEY & GREEN)

Another bitch of top-class and a worthy Champion and one can easily she why she has done so well. Very pleasing head, well-filled and expressive eye and classical profile super frame for a bitch. Firm top-line, another one not in full bloom on the day but certainly nothing to hide, moved and showed well.

3rd INT CH/DUTCH/BEL CH PERFECT STAR OF THE SPECIAL LOBO [ATC AW00563BEL] (P E M LEFERINK)

Although maybe a touch longer in loin very nicely balanced and sound conformation. Most appealing head with soft truly feminine expression and good filling, firm topline, excellent tail set”, well-presented and showed with typical attitude.
